Advanced Wound Care

NPWT stands for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (also called vacuum-assisted closure or a wound vac). It is a medical treatment used to help complex, severe, or hard-to-heal wounds close faster by using a specialized sealed dressing attached to a vacuum pump to remove fluid and bacteria.

How NPWT Works

  • Sealed dressing: A piece of open-cell foam or gauze is placed inside or on the wound bed.
  • Airtight seal: The wound and foam are covered with a clear, sticky plastic drape.
  • Suction pump: A tube connects the dressing to a portable or stationary vacuum machine that applies controlled negative pressure (suction).
  • Fluid collection: Extra fluid and germs are pulled away from the wound into a waste canister

Main Benefits
  • Removes swelling: Drains excess fluid to reduce pressure around the injury.
  • Improves blood flow: Brings fresh blood and oxygen to the tissue.
  • Builds new tissue: Stimulates the growth of healthy granulation tissue.
  • Lowers infection risk: Protects the open area from outside germs.

Common Uses
  • Severe acute wounds: Open fractures, major lacerations, and severe burns.
  • Surgical wounds: Complex operations or incisions at risk of opening or getting infected.
  • Chronic ulcers: Diabetic foot ulcers or pressure sores that do not heal with normal bandages.
